Letter to ISPCAN President Franklin Farinati M.D.

April 16, 2001

Dr. Franklin Farinati, M.D.
President, ISPCAN Executive Committee, Strategic Planning

Dear Dr. Farinati,

Through the years I have met many parents who say that their families have been unjustly destroyed by government agencies intended for the protection of children. From my research on the internet during the last year, I see that there are an increasing number of parents speaking out on the injustices of the child protection system, especially in the United States.

How does your organization address the needs of families unjustly destroyed by government agencies? Obviously unjust detentions traumatize children as well as the other family members.

I have discovered that in the United States, a large percentage of children detained in state custody are placed there on charges that are later "unfounded" by the agencies. Quite often these children remain in state custody long enough to be adopted out to non-family members after "termination of parental rights" procedures that are nearly impossible for poor people (the usual targets) to fight against.

I admire your organization's high ideals in wanting to promote the protection of children throughout the world. More and more it appears, however, that on local levels injustice takes over when caseworkers wrongfully detain children on trivial charges that cannot be defended against. Put quite simply, it appears that child protection agencies are unjustly taking children from the poor to give to the rich.

Thank you in advance for any help or information you can offer. It is my sincere hope that we can enter into some kind of dialogue on this subject with the intention of giving hope to families that are suffering intense pain from these injustices.

Linda Martin
