Welcome to Child Welfare Reform!

Everyone knows something's very "not right" with the system. It's time to get down to try and change it! On one small aspect this is what I have done in alerting elected officials in NYC to a disaster in the making (Sent to most NYC elected officials):

I am an ACS worker in New York City.

ACS is creating a so called "Children's Center" at the old Bellevue Hospital Morgue. $67 million were spent on renovating the morgue. This is where children who are removed from their homes due to unsafe situations or conditions will be brought to spend from several hours to several days time waiting for placements.

Union Local 371 health and Safety Director Arnie Goldwag tells me that formaldehyde levels exceed EPA and NYOSH standards. I would hope there will be an uproar about this and it will be stopped until the safety of these "at risk" children can be assured. There are no window guards - as an ACS worker this is one of the first things I look at when making a safety assessment - and there are also issues regarding access of adolescents to the younger children.

The site is in close proximity to a homeless men's shelter as well.

It seems like an outrage to me - and the building where children are housed for pre - placement now at 7 Laight Street is and has been a "sick building" too with issues of fungus spores.

Ask the mayor about plans to locate foster children in a building that exceeds EPA standards for formaldehyde and that is right next to 600 homeless men!

Hello there,

I was surfing the internet today and came across some information about a new child welfare holding facility in your city that is actually a remodeled morgue, with formaldehyde levels beyond EPA standards.

Please let me know if any part of this is factual information.
